How Do I Find the Right Church Near Me? 7 Steps To Ease Your Church Search in Minutes

We’ve all been on our phones or laptops searching endlessly for “church near me” or “bible study near me” trying to find a good church community to join.

But it all seems so overwhelming.

And then you have the different denominations like the Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, and all-encompassing Non-denominational churches to make things more difficult.

The frustration can lead you to give up and put off going to church for another week, only to repeat the process over and over.

In most urban areas, it's hard to find a church because there are so many. It’s like the Netflix paradox where you find yourself scrolling endlessly for something to watch but never settling because there are far too many choices.

We agree with you …

Finding The Right Church Near You Is Hard

But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be.

There are simple ways to cut down on the number of choices you’re facing to find the right church tailored to meet your specific needs and wants.

We can help you break through decision fatigue and find your church community easily and more quickly. All it takes is a plan.

Here Are 7 Steps To Help You Find The Right Church

1.          Know Your Needs

What is it that you are looking for in a church? Do you have children and want an excellent children’s ministry? Are you young and single and want meet up with like-minded singles? Are you a member of a specific denomination, like a Baptist church or Methodist church, and want to stay within that denomination?

Knowing your needs from the start helps to narrow churches down quickly and easily.

Here are some questions to ask yourself that will help you identify your needs for a church:

-              Do I want an energetic church or a quieter church? Loud worship or quiet worship?

-              Who’s attending with me, and what are their needs? Children? Parents? Teens?

-              What kind of outreach does the church offer for the community? Do they focus on local community outreach or on global community outreach?

-              Do I want heavier theological teaching or teaching geared to my life and current situations? Or do I just want a good balance of the two?

-              What am I looking for in a church community? Do I want a weekly bible study or other weekly ministry opportunities like small groups, outreaches, or fun excursions? What do I love to do that a church may be able to help me with?

2.          Pray

This is probably the most powerful yet most neglected step in the church-finding

process.

Prayer is our communication with God. He hears our prayers (Psalms 17:6; 1 John 5:14) and acts on them (John 15:16; Philippians 4:6-7). When we pray, our hearts align with God’s will for our lives (Matthew 6:10; Mark 14:36).

The least we can do in this process is the most we can do. Pray and seek God’s heart for your life, and ask Him for help to find the church that is right for you.

3.          Research

Researching a church will take some time, but it helps you discern whether a church will meet your specific needs and wants. Occasionally, all it takes is hearing a sermon from the pastor or seeing the church worship through their live streams to know if the church is a good match for you.

Church websites are also great ways to get a feel for how the church operates and learn what services the church offers. You can also read bios about the leaders of the church, and also view the church's beliefs on their website.

4.           Visit

After you narrow down your choices, you will have to visit one or more churches to get a better feel for the atmosphere of each church and to worship with other believers. Even if you find you don’t want to keep attending a church you visit, you’ll have a good time in corporate worship.

Visiting a church is a great way to see how engaging the church is, how friendly they are, and helps you to see yourself being a part of that community.

5.          Journal

When visiting churches, it’s often easy to forget which church experience was which. Keeping a journal helps you to keep track and better understand your experience at each church.

You can take notes of the sermon or bible study, questions that came up, what you liked, and what you didn’t like about your visit. You can then read your thoughts later to help you make an informed decision on whether or not you want to return.

6.          Ask Friends and People You Trust

Asking for church references from people you trust is helpful. Ask a friend or coworker if they go to church and where. This will be an easier way to find a good church community and offers you a private guide to all the ins and outs of the church you visit if you go with a friend who has been there.

It also makes asking questions or wondering about different aspects of the church experience more straightforward. Your friend may have some insight into how and why the church operates as it does.
